FAQs

Do I need a referral from another healthcare practitioner for my appointment with Dr Roufail?

As with any eye doctor in Melbourne, you will need a valid referral from an optometrist or GP in order to claim any Medicare rebates from your appointment with Dr Roufail. This referral can be sent ahead of time by your optometrist or GP, or you can bring it in with you to your appointment. However, it must be appropriately dated to cover your visit with Dr Roufail.

What laser vision correction procedures are available?

As a refractive specialist, Dr Roufail has undergone further training in various refractive surgery techniques. These include LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), PRESBYOND ( blended mono vision), and SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction). In addition to these laser vision correction procedures, he also offers other refractive surgery options such as ICL (implantable Collamer lenses) and RLE (refractive lens exchange).

Does Dr Roufail offer emergency appointments?

Yes. If you believe you have an emergency situation, it is best to call the clinic ahead of time or see your local optometrist or GP for triage. They can then arrange an urgent referral to Dr Roufail, whether at one of his private clinics or at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH). Dr Roufail is a member of the vitreoretinal team at the RVEEH and has 24-hour access to the surgical facilities there for the management of acute retinal conditions such as retinal detachment.

What payment options are accepted by Dr Roufail’s clinics?
If you are seeing Dr Roufail as a private patient and have a balance outstanding after you have claimed any eligible Medicare or private health insurance rebates, his clinic accepts both cash and credit card.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for my appointment?
Our receptionists may have a medical history form for you to complete if you are a first-time patient with Dr Roufail, so it is advisable to arrive at your appointment at least 15 minutes early. If you have private health insurance, you should bring this along with you, as well as a valid Medicare card. As many ocular assessments require the instillation of dilating eye drops, it is recommended you avoid driving yourself home after the appointment and instead organise alternative transport.
What can I expect during my appointment?
Your consultation will be tailored to your reason for referral. For most patients, relevant tests will include testing your vision, your prescription, and your eye pressure. You may have your eyes dilated for Dr Roufail to assess your retina at the back of the eye and may also have various scans and images taken. If these incur an additional cost to your consultation fees, they will be discussed with you beforehand.

Note: Surgical or invasive procedures carry inherent risks. As part of our standard practice, we thoroughly discuss these risks during the consent process before any surgical procedure. Your understanding and comfort are our utmost priority.
