The revolutionary SMILE eye surgery has come to Melbourne, with Dr Edward Roufail being one of only two surgeons in the state to offer this procedure. What is SMILE?
SMILE laser vision surgery is Melbourne’s newest and most cutting-edge technique for refractive surgery. Alongside LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), SMILE eye surgery gives Melbourne patients another safe and effective method of getting rid of their glasses and contact lenses.
SMILE stands for small incision lenticule extraction and makes the most of femtosecond laser technology. By creating only a keyhole incision, better corneal biomechanical stability is achieved with SMILE laser eye surgery. Melbourne residents leading active lifestyles can enjoy excellent vision with short recovery times and low rates of complications.
Dr Edward Roufail is only one of 2 surgeons offering SMILE surgery in Melbourne; Eye Laser Specialists is the only laser vision correction practice to offer SMILE in Victoria.
How Does SMILE Eye Surgery Work?
Dr Roufail and his clinical team have worked hard to bring SMILE to Melbourne. SMILE laser vision surgery in his Melbourne clinic is performed with state-of-the-art equipment, including the highly-precise femtosecond laser.
With SMILE, Melbourne residents can experience a minimally invasive form of surgical sight correction. A tiny keyhole incision is created in the cornea at the front surface of the eyeball. The femtosecond laser forms a precisely shaped disc of tissue from the deeper corneal layers, which is then extracted through the keyhole incision. This results in the cornea being reshaped without the need to disrupt the outer corneal layers.
Through SMILE eye surgery, Melbourne patients can receive a form of refractive surgery that is minimally invasive, is associated with rapid recovery, requires only a single step, and comes with a lower risk of post-operative dry eye. SMILE surgery is also better for those who play contact sports or engage in high-intensity physical activities.
In Dr Roufail’s clinics throughout Melbourne, SMILE is available to correct high degrees of myopia (short-sightedness) and moderate degrees of astigmatism (up to -10D refractive error and up -5D astigmatism). At this point in time, SMILE laser surgery is not suitable for long-sightedness (hyperopia). If found to be ineligible for SMILE, Melbourne residents wishing to pursue refractive surgery may still be offered another procedure such as LASIK, PRK, RLE, or ICL.

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible for SMILE surgery?
Your eligibility for SMILE laser eye surgery will be determined after a comprehensive examination with Dr Roufail in Eye Laser Specialists in Melbourne. SMILE laser surgery is a safe and effective procedure, but only if it’s performed on suitable candidates. During your initial consultation, Dr Roufail will assess the overall health of your eyes, take accurate measurements of your prescription, perform biometric measurements, and have a discussion with you about what visual results you’re hoping to achieve.
Other factors that may make you unsuitable for SMILE include having an unstable prescription, other sight-limiting eye diseases such as retinal scarring or amblyopia (lazy eye), falling outside the recommended age range, or being pregnant or breastfeeding.
What are my options if I’m found to be unsuitable for SMILE?
This depends on the reason that SMILE is not the best solution for you. If having long-sightedness is the reason for being excluded from SMILE, Melbourne patients may still be eligible for another method, such as LASIK, PRK, or ICL. If it’s a matter of another ocular disease that needs treatment, such as cataract, your sight can actually be corrected as part of the cataract operation that Dr Roufail performs regularly in his clinics throughout Melbourne.
SMILE, LASIK, and PRK are all considered unsuitable for people past the age of around 50 years old due to a natural age-related decline in near focus called presbyopia. Instead, another sight-correcting procedure, such as PRESBYOND laser visIon correction OR Refractive Lens Exchange, may be more effective for poeple over the age of 50.
How much does SMILE laser surgery cost?
After your initial consultation with Dr Roufail to establish your eligibility for SMILE surgery, he will be able to discuss the associated costs with you. There may also be a payment plan available to you, which can be discussed at your appointment.
Do I need a referral to have SMILE surgery?
What is involved in the recovery period after having SMILE laser surgery?
Due to its minimally invasive nature, SMILE is typically associated with a relatively short recovery time, which is similar to LASIK and much faster than PRK. After your operation, Dr Roufail will provide you with some prescription eyedrops to protect your eyes as they heal. You will also be given instructions on your post-op period, such as avoiding swimming pools and saunas and how to keep your eyes from common contaminants.
Your sight may feel quite clear the day after your operation, even to the point of being able to drive comfortably. Though your eyes will continue to stabilise over a few weeks, most people are able to return to their usual hobbies and work tasks within a few days. If your normal activities expose you to a risk of contamination or facial injury, Dr Roufail will advise you to take a longer break. During your consultations with him, he will be able to provide you with a more accurate timeframe for your recovery after performing his examination.
I’m very nervous when it comes to eye operations. Can I have general anaesthesia?
Are the effects of SMILE laser eye surgery permanent?
Note: Surgical or invasive procedures carry inherent risks. As part of our standard practice, we thoroughly discuss these risks during the consent process before any surgical procedure. Your understanding and comfort are our utmost priority.
